A few words from our ELHAP freinds
Kelvin and Jess are support workers at ELHAP, one of our chosen charities in 2018.
Despite having not done much cycling at all (if any), in true O2e spirit, they pounced on the opportunity to be a part of Big Kev’s Ride and see what O2e is all about.
Hello you amazing lot – just following up from Kelvins post, although he’s pretty much summed it up. On my journey home last night I was absolutely full of emotions and it’s only now after a good night’s sleep and a cup of tea that I’ve worked it out.
Sometimes working in the area that we do feels like a bit of a bubble. On the inside is the family, staff and services who work tirelessly everyday to support, understand and ensure the happiness and fulfilment of our children and adults, and on the outside is budget cuts, services being closed in their masses and an enormous group of people with disabilities who are undervalued.
It can feel like quite a lonely struggle to bring our amazing children and adults into the communities they deserve to be in.
Cycling with you all these past few days has completely changed that narrative for me. That you are willing to push yourselves, raise money and give your time to the people I support and those like them has filled me with so much love. You are truly a ray of light in quite a dark time for those with disabilities.
Sorry for the big gush, but I just wanted you to all know how amazing and life changing your support is. It is appreciated by such a huge amount of us.
On a slightly different note, if anyone else is selling a slightly more appropriate bike than my Bobbin drop me a message.
I’m 5ft 2 and I’ve got some PBs to beat next year!
THANK YOU ALL 💗
Jess and I have felt part of the family immediately and to be surrounded by such a welcoming group has been overwhelming.
Before this trip, neither of us knew if we had it in us to complete the distance but with every passing mile that became more physically and mentally challenging, the encouragement and love we were given became even greater.
Huge shout outs to Team Rafe for the amazing support throughout the weekend, all the support crew for their care for us and the organisational team behind the logistical mammoth this trip must’ve been. We could not have completed it without you all.
And remarkably, we had a little fun along the way too …😉 And we may have made some friends and memories to treasure.
A special mention must go to Avril and Brett for their dedication and generosity from the moment we signed up in January. Simply put, without them, we would not have been in France riding (I didn’t even have a road bike) so we are hugely grateful for their kindness 💗
O2e believes that amazing things can be achieved once you get out of your comfort zone. At ELHAP, we’ve always believed that our children and young people need to be reminded of their incredible individual potential, supported to take risks, play freely and simply celebrate being themselves.
This is why we are so proud to be supported by such a like minded group and this week has been a testament to that. We’re hoping to reach our fundraising target of £2,000 by the end of the month!
Thank you again and we will see you next year, perhaps with bikes that aren’t mobile scaffolds, the knowledge of how to use more than 5 gears and some fresh blood to join the magic 💗
P.S GOOD LUCK IN 2019
